Ugh. Something's been wrong with my back since last night so I gave in and watched The Pandorica Opens instead of my original plan which was to wait until net week.

Finding Nemo the movie - one of the best of the new Disney.
Finding Nemo the Ice Show? (as interpreted from the tv commercials)
Most. Horrifying. Thing. Ever.
How big does your genius have to be to think, 'Yes, yes! Women, on skates, with fishheads on their chests, eyes at breast level, and for Dory, mouth unfortunately placed - that's the ticket!'
This is the point where society is the winner of the Darwin award. We're about to turn on the rocket pack on our backs and crash into the mountain.

Wow.
There were 58 people at my caucus tonight. We ran out of ballots and had to make more. I just... that's 52 more people than the midterm, 48 more than 2004.
In the preference vote - Obama - 29, Clinton 28 (the convenor forgot to vote! - it would have been 29 - 29 in that case).
Resolutions passed without dissent-
The party support legislation to prevent employment discrimination based on sexual orientation.
The party support the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell.
The party refuse to support changing the Minnesota and Federal Constitutions with Amendments banning same sex marriage.

This is how sick I am:
This afternoon I drank 8 cups of herbal tea. Okay, so it was 1 Black Tea Bag + 2 Herbal Tea Bagsb = blerbal tea?
The first 4 cups were Bengal Spice and the second 4 cups were Tangerine Orange Zinger.
I like tea a great deal, but it has to be right out of the pot hot, which... yeah. Doesn't last. Lukewarm tea? Vile. So I put my blerbal tea into a thermos after it was steeped and it was actually drinkable! Unlike most of the hot tea I had last week at the conference, in which the hot water pots were not at all hot by the time we got to them. 8-(
Adding the herbal teas helped as my sense of taste is currently toasted, so that was good. The Bengal Spice was okay, chai-like, but there was an offnote, either the chickory, carob, or vanilla. I like Stash's Chai better for Chai. The Tangerine Orange Zinger was better, different, but I liked it.
So, all that hot tea, and then a hot shower, but the congestion doesn't seem to be moving all that much, dammit. Though I have my voice back and I sound a bit less like Harvey Fierstein than I did this afternoon.
My job next week? Get SGA icons, sheesh.
Okay, finish this, then Alton!

BUT!
I managed to remember the second showing of Eureka this week. I thought the episode was sweet; Eureka FTW! I did not like that transmission got fubared twice. This is why we have cable, cable.
And I saw a commercial for Megasnake. Michael Shanks and the winner of 'Who wants to be a Superhero'. Yeeaaah. Honestly, I don't know whether to go with 'and he was the only real actor on SG1!' or 'Oh, Michael.'
And lastly, Flash Gordon.

2. Thank god SGA was picked up for another season, because Zarkov was cast as if it was for DH. *shudders*
3. YHALOTHAR, Vancouver. *hugs*

How I spent the second day of my summer Vacation (or, Beth does not call into work to check on things day 2):
Today we loaded 3 TVs, 1 monitor, 1 VCR, 2 DVD players, and about 8 fluorescent light bulbs into the truck and took them to be recycled.
$185 later... they are gone. (the electronics were $0.41 a pound, so it was about 440lbs)
We still have 2 TVs, 1 Microwave, and a toaster oven for the next trip.
Then we went to the farmer's market and got corn, tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, green beans, onions, baby red potatoes, and kohlrabi.
Now to change and go back downstairs and collapse more cardboard and try to get a handle on the stuff to put on freecycle.

So, last Friday I really wanted to grill some steaks - and since I totally got hosed on the mini-propane grill (with mini-propane tanks - cheap to buy, $5/ea to dispose of...), we had bought an electric grill a few years ago.
It was dead. Deadity dead.
So, today after getting my hair chopped all off - shortest it's been in years - I got this:
http://www.brevilleusa.com/products/800 grxl/index.jsp?sku=800grxl&cID=233&pID=11&pvID=11
It's so cute! And fast! And cute!
The other one (and it was Krups - it should have totally lasted longer), had a grill grille, which was horrifying to clean, and the griddle plate was from crap.
Made chicken breasts in it tonight and while it took a little time to get the grill cleaned, it cleaned perfectly clean, no unreachable bits to get icky.
I totally want a grilled cheese now. *g*

1. There's nothing more illuminating about fandom in general than people who talk about racism in SGA with that note of 'only them' to it. Bitca, please. Yes, we like a crappy show. Thank you for sharing, we'll make sure your opinion is registered.
2. Using the name of the character in an AU is not always the same as using the character. If I wrote (HAH) a story in which the computer Rodney was working on was RONON - this is not to say that I think people with more melanin than John and Rodney are computers. Many times using the names are because in an AU there's always a place for a canon reference. And since I'm a shipper, the story would be about John and Rodney and their BIG LUV. And I'd totally make RONON a laconic computer. Maybe even with braided fringe around the CPU.
3. Specialist Ronon Dex did not seem to be a university professor. He seemed to be Alonzo Wilder. Saying this does not mean I think he's stupid. But be honest - if you had 1 person who was going to fix the oxygen tank on your spaceship - Rodney or Ronon - who would you choose? Sateda was advanced in weapons and ships - okay. Having those things in your society does not mean that *you* have the intelligence to build them yourself. I can't build a car from the ground up, how about you? (yes, we could both learn, as Ronon can learn, but at this specific point, could you?)
4. Higher learning amongst the Athosians - I'm not seeing it. So yeah, it could be hard to place Teyla in terms of education. Now, it'd be cool to see that Teyla went to higher school on another planet, but we haven't seen that. The only tech we've seen Teyla have is a lighter. She's not stupid. Is she intelligent? Absolutely. Is she underused? Totally. But by our educational strata here in the states? She's not on par with the Earthers.
Zelenka, Weir, Rodney, and Parrish - all have Ph'ds. Lorne, Caldwell, Ellis, and Shep - Master's at minimum.
So, yes. If you're using 2007 American values of educational worth - yes, the Earthers do rank higher.
5. Ronon as a criminal in an AU. Let's see, on the run from the authority, imprisoned and altered by said authority. (Yes, I get wraith = bad) Yeah, I totally can't see why someone might think he'd be a good fit. Of course, he'd be innocent, and he'd have to be defended, and even the prosecutor wouldn't want the case... But still, that WORKS.
Is this discussion (beyond what happened in comm, the what's happening now) happening because of white guilt? Specifically the guilt of liking a show in which the main focal characters are white males? Is it inherently part of the social construction of racism to like shows where those focal characters are white males? Is it you use what you get? What does that say about Due South? Does this make us bad feminists?
And lastly.
Why do so many fans treat the topic as revolutionary and new every time it comes up?

After four days solid of doing pretty much nothing but grocery shopping and cooking (and sga obtaining), Thanksgiving is pretty much all ready to go.
Lester the Turkey is done and carved but for his breast, the jello salads are chillin', the gravy is cooling, and the dressing has been added to to reduce the pepper and sage factor that was threatening to become an issue. Everything else is down at Grandmere's, and my aunt is bringing the pies. I hope the non-pumpkin isn't apple.
I so wish I had an oreo cookie right now.
Happy Thanksgiving!
